It looks good on you, but how does it look on the planet? Here’s another scoop you need to know before buying a new outfit!
The huge role of microplastics
Annually, around 1.5 million tonnes of microplastics enter the oceans; until now, over 14 million tonnes have accumulated on the world’s ocean floor.
What are the origins of microplastics?
The majority of microplastics from textiles are released the first few times textiles are washed. Fast fashion accounts for particularly high levels of such releases because fast fashion garments account for a high share of first washes, as they are used for only a short time and tend to wear out quickly due to their low quality.
The second source of microplastics is related to the breakdown of larger plastic items in the environment, such as littered plastic packaging or plastic lost from open landfills.
What about the consequences?
All kinds of living organisms ingest microplastics: animals and humans are exposed to microplastic pollution, both by ingesting and inhaling. The release of microplastics into the ocean is very harmful to marine life
Microplastics can contain toxic chemicals that are believed to induce, according to the researches, inflammatory reactions and toxicity
