Why did we choose fast fashion as a specific topic of our campaign?
Did you know that the fashion industry is one of the largest polluters in the world? Here’s why we need to rethink our fashion choices and connect the dots with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – The average person buys 60% more clothing today than 15 years ago, but each garment is kept for half as long. This results in 92 million tons of textile waste each year! – Fast fashion encourages a throwaway culture, leading to excessive waste and environmental harm.
SDG 13: Climate Action – The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. – Producing one pair of jeans emits as much CO2 as driving a car for over 80 miles!
SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation – Textile dyeing is the second largest polluter of clean water globally. About 20% of industrial water pollution comes from textile dyeing and treatment. – It takes **2,700 liters** of water to produce one cotton T-shirt. That’s enough drinking water for one person for 2.5 years!
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth – Millions of workers in fast fashion supply chains face poor working conditions, low wages, and even exploitative labor practices. Ethical fashion supports fair wages and safe working environments.
Let’s make a change by supporting sustainable fashion brands, buying less but better, and recycling our clothes. Together, we can reduce the environmental impact of fashion and promote a more sustainable future.
